The French Institute (Institut français de Birmanie) and the Goethe Institute in Myanmar are proud to announce “GONGS & SKINS – An International Percussion Festival” with concerts in Yangon, Taunggyi and Mandalay.
The extraordinary richness of percussion traditions is one of the intangible treasures of South East Asia. Myanmar adds its own distinctive part to this outstanding variety of percussive forms. With its original musical compositions and instruments it can easily compete with the traditions of Thailand or even Indonesia. One enriching element is the ethnic diversity of the country: the great HsaingWaing and Dobat traditions of the Bamar are completed by a multifaceted array of instruments and rhythms of the different minority communities.
Despite this vital diversity of percussive forms, there remains the risk of a certain conflation in a purely folkloristic niche, because of missing exchange and input from outside. This is the vantage point of “Gongs & Skins”. The initiative will bring together percussionists from different ethnic groups in Myanmar, from France and from Germany. Under the guidance of the German percussion artist and expert Prof. Bernhard Wulff the international musicians will work together in a weeklong workshop and develop the repertoire for a festival with concerts in Yangon, Taunggyi and Mandalay.
